Genre/Influences: Experimental, Cinematographic, Industrial-Psychedelia.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: Yodok III is the sonic brainchild between Nowegian artists Tomas Järmyr (drums)
and Kristoffer Lo (amplified tuba, flugabone) and Belgian legendary underground pioneer
Dirk Serries (electric guitar). The trio last year released their third full length on Consouling Sounds while they also released several live works.

Content: “A Dreamer Ascends” features 2 long duration cuts, which feel pretty compact and related with each other. The work is a true sonic voyage where the trio doesn’t really matter about music styles or influences. It’s just a ‘free’ expression of music, which is clearly mixing different ideas together. From Industrial sound treatments to Psychedelic guitar playing and overwhelming, complex drum patterns the music is something interesting  to discover. Some call it ‘free jazz’, but there’s no appropriate description!

+ + + : The work sounds mainly driven through a kind of improvisation. But there’s a true progression in the structure, the dark sphere moving on crescendo while Dirk Serries’ guitar play creates a psychedelic and apocalyptic sensation. Especially the first track “Off The Black Moon” is a great experience. “Monstrosity We Reap” has a more explicit visual appeal and makes me think of an Experimental Soundtrack.

– – – : It’s a pity the work only features two tracks. Sound-wise this is a complex production, which however might appeal for a varied audience.

Conclusion: Do you know this kind of movie featuring a script you’ll never totally understand although you like it because it has something fascinating?! Yodok III is the sonic incarnation of this particular sensation!

Best songs: “Off The Black Moon”.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
