Genre/Influences: Dark-wave, gothic, rock-gothic.

Background/Info: Hailing from the Northern part of England, Vukovar is active since 2014 and has already released an impressive number of productions. After their last year released album “Monument” (on vinyl) on Trisol, they now signed to Other Voices Records. The new work is also available as vinyl format.

Content: Vukovar has this nostalgic sound getting us back to the 80s. But the work is not an emulation, but a mix between 80s reminiscences and later gothic music. The rhythms are rather slow and linear. Some vocal parts have something sensual and half-spoken like. The tracks have been achieved with electronic arrangements while the last part of the album moves deeper into rock-goth fields. Notice by the way there’re 3 cover versions featured at this album including a song originally written by Genesis P. Orridge.

+ + + : The best part of the album comes just in the midst of the tracklist. “Prurient” and “Love’s Provocation” both are noticeable cuts for their cold sensuality emerging from the vocals and the slow rhythm. I also like certain atmospheric layer hanging over the songs, which is reinforcing the dark format of the work.

– – – : The album has something versatile like a band, which is still in search of a personal sound identity. I think they could better focalize on one specific aspect to elaborate it next.

Conclusion: “Cremator” is a pleasant gothic work without absolute highlights, but also without worst songs.

Best songs: “Prurient”, “Love’s Provocation”, “Dive For Your Memory”.
