Genre/Influences: EBM.

Background/Info: Xtort rose up from the ashes of the Dutsh industrial-metal formation Hoer. Xtort is an electronic project unleashing its second full length album.

Content: The album takes off with an intro, which brings us next to a dark EBM format reminding forgotten times. Xtort indeed is inspired by ‘early’ EBM sounds, which they composed with vintage gear. The songs are recovered with good-old synth lines and melodic passages. Most of the vocals are sung in English, but you’ll also discover a few German sung vocals. The last song is something totally different. It’s a kind of outro featuring an acoustic song.

+ + + : The vintage and mainly 90s inspiration brings good-old memories alive. I especially like the synth lines hanging over the songs. I have a little preference for the somewhat harder-like title song and the more elaborated “Like A Knife”.

– – – : Despite of this project’s good intentions and interesting retro approach I experienced the production as being the reflection of the poorly inspired artwork from the front cover. It’s a rudimentary work, which needs to be elaborated.

Conclusion: This album couldn’t convince me although I like the band’s vintage approach. This band can do much better!

Best songs: “Nothing Is Real”, “Like a Knife”.

Rate: (5½).

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
