Genre/Influences: Experimental, Soundscape, Abstract.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Brume is a French solo-project driven by Christian Renou. He definitely became one of the most renowned artists dealing with Experimental- / Abstract music. He can look back at an impressive discography and now strikes back with a new album released by Belgian label EE Tapes.

Content: The work features an extended, single, track however divided into 11 parts. It however appears to be a sound collage getting the listener into an imaginary sonic travel. The creation features multiple passages from pure Soundscape to total Experimentalism to improvisation. Sampled dialogues, field recordings, metallic percussions, trumpet like sounds and repetitive electronic sequences have been sticked together.

+ + + : If you’re into total Experimentalism or simply Abstract music format you definitely gone like the new Brume. Christian Renou remains an intriguing artist; is he nothing less than an anti-music artist or a visionary musician. The reality probably lies somewhere in between. He however confirms to be a true sound fetishist. I was impressed by the sound canvas this album has been made of.

– – – : The album is holding you in its grip for 69 minutes but especially the last part sounds monotonous and less inspired compared with the rest of the work.

Conclusion: Music without compromises and impossible to label!

Rate: 7.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
