Background/Info: French-American formation Deleyaman have been active since 2000 and now unleash their ninth studio album to date. Core members and soul of the band Aret Madilian and Beatrice Valantin invited six guest musicians to play several instruments on “The Sudbury Inn”.
Content: Deleyaman remains faithful to their authentic and graceful composition. They’re achieving their songs with an impressive number of authentic, traditional instruments like duduk, violin, soprano and tenor sax, bansuri, flute, drums, guitar and bass while using keyboards as well. The songs are pretty diversified, mixing different music influences from Chanson to Ethereal to Cinematic and even Jazzy elements. It sounds like an imaginary mix between Dead Can Dance and Leonard Cohen. Aret Madilian’s deep and warm timbre of voice is guiding you through the work. The lyrics are mainly taken from poems.
+ + + : Three years after the outstanding “Sentinel”-album Deleyaman has simply accomplished a similar masterpiece. This is a beautiful and artistic album. It starts with the great, artistic, digipak featuring a booklet with all lyrics. Sound wise there’s this graceful and sensitive approach in composing music. The multiple instruments are empowering the authentic feeling of the record. This is a work filled with different emotions and feelings. Deleyaman sounds like music for the soul which gives you goosebumps. There are multiple brilliant songs featured. From both debut songs covering folk and Ethereal influences to the last cuts which are into pure, emotional, Chanson style. Deleyaman will make you cry and still get you happy at another songs.
– – – : No true minus points but I just can’t understand why this band never gained a wider recognition.
Conclusion: I can only express gratitude and respect for this absolute masterpiece.
